Security

Securing your information is really not that difficult a task. Let us show just how easy it is provide you with the peace of mind you are looking for with regard to protecting your electronic assets.

Layered Security

Whether you are on a home/mobile system or on the corporate LAN, securing your valuable date requires some of the same basic methodologies be deployed. Industry best practices focus on the concept of in-depth or layered security. Layered security is a practice that combines several different security components, such as anti-virus software, firewalls, intrusion detection and vulnerability assessment tools, to create a comprehensive and defensive barrier many times stronger than its individual parts alone. Layered security exponentially increases the cost and difficulty of penetration for an attacker, thereby decreasing the likelihood that they would bother pursuing your organization.

To illustrate this point consider the following intrusion detection example. Even if the network IDS fails, firewalls, vulnerability assessment, and anti-virus software are still effective. A properly configured firewall can block most unsophisticated attacks before a network IDS can detect it. Vulnerability assessment can identify weaknesses and help to eliminate them. If a system has no vulnerabilities, then real attacks fail even if they are not detected. Even if the IDS does not detect the delivery of known viruses, the firewall does not block their delivery, and the vulnerability assessment does not eliminate the means of infection, anti-virus software can still detect these viruses.

Recent high-profile intrusion cases have demonstrated a fundamental inequality of information warfare, showing that an attacker with limited expertise, some time, and even a free dial-up Internet connection can cost an organization millions of dollars, its reputation, and the ability to conduct business. If a hacker is intent on causing your business harm, they will probably do so. Having a multi-layered security system in place will make penetrating your network more expensive, and require more resources than most potential intruders are willing (or able) to apply. Layered security increases the chances that the intruder will go elsewhere, looking for less protected systems to compromise.

Whether you are a home user or a corporate IT decision maker, securing your private information is your responsibility.
